Environmental Technician

BrightFields, Inc. is an award-winning environmental consulting and remediation firm with over 20 years of experience located in Wilmington, DE.  We focus on the assessment, remediation, and redevelopment of contaminated brownfield properties.  In addition, we own and operate heavy equipment and perform a wide variety of projects including the restoration of streams and waterways, collection and disposal of hazardous materials, selective interior and exterior building demolition, excavation and removal of contaminated soil and debris.

We are seeking an experienced field leader to serve as an Environmental Technician III on our Remediation Team.  As an Environmental Technician III you’ll be involved in project bidding/planning, operating heavy equipment, leading and executing tasks in the field, maintaining project records in the office, and communicating with project personnel, vendors and clients.  We’re seeking a full-time candidate with 3-5 years of field work and/or heavy equipment operation experience to join our growing company.

The candidate should be comfortable in a wide variety of working environments, which will include outdoor fieldwork, office work, independent and team settings, and traveling. This position requires good writing and communication skills and the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously. Current OSHA 40-hour Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) certification is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Know and understand various field processes and equipment capabilities for the purposes of bidding projects.
  • Assist with project planning/bidding, project execution in the field, and controlling schedules.
  • Understand and assist with controlling project budget.
  • Perform health and safety oversight and direct others on safe work practices in the field.
  • Prepare demolition permit applications, E&S plan applications, and utility clearance requests.
  • Write Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) and Health & Safety Plans (HASPs).  Conduct, document and analyze Safe Performance Observations (SPOs). 
  • Know and follow all DOT regulations pertaining to trucks and trailers. 
  • Provide mentoring and on-the-job training to less experienced team members.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of relevant field experience
  • Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in Construction Management, Environmental Science, Geology, or related studies is preferred but not required.
  • Competent using Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and interpersonal
  • Current OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER health and safety training certification is a plus
  • Willing to maintain annual medical monitoring and OSHA certification (at company expense)
  • Available for occasional travel and project site visits within the Mid-Atlantic region
  • Valid Driver’s License and ability to be DOT certified (drive a pickup truck and trailer)
  • Comfortable and safe with being around and operating heavy equipment
